Development Officer

The Dorothy Ley Hospice offers both community and residential care to people living fullest in comfort, with dignity, meaning and hope. Our services, offered at no cost to the individual or their family members, address their physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs. Last year, Hospice staff and its more than 300 trained volunteers served over 2,500 individuals.

The Hospice has launched a new five-year strategic plan to build on the organization’s successes to expand hospice services to meet the growing demand for hospice care.

The Development Officer, Foundations & Corporate is an expanded role being introduced as part of the growth of the Dorothy Ley Hospice Fundraising Team. Reporting to the Director of Development & Communications, you will be responsible for overseeing the overall grants strategy and contributing to the achievement of the Hospice’s revenue targets. You will personally identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects within a portfolio of Foundations & Corporate donors, in accordance with performance targets set by the Director of Development. You will lead the grant application process from initial research to fulfillment, ongoing administration, and reporting.

In collaboration with the fundraising and communications team, you will develop and implement processes for pipeline management, and you will also execute the prospect research activities for the department.

We are a small collaborative team, and we are looking for someone looking for an opportunity to grow both their own skills and contribute to ambitious fundraising targets.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead for grant opportunities and manage the Dorothy Ley Hospice grant application process from start to finish.
  • Manage a core list of 50 – 75 prospective donors for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and pursue leads with identified foundations and corporate prospects.
  • Manage the research and identification of grant opportunities.Lead the creation of grant proposals, in collaboration with the Director of Development, and other colleagues; prepare external budgets, work plans, and deliverables for grant applications and proposals.
  • Monitor and execute grant administration: oversee timelines, deliverables, reporting and recognition requirements, and liaise with colleagues to meet deadlines
  • Lead the development of proposal supporting documents materials including proposal templates, proposal and application content, and application materials (budgets, work plans, measurable outcomes), to streamline the process for generating proposal packages.
  • Contribute to pipeline management processes.
  • Oversee Prospect Research to conduct research activities for the department, generating detailed prospect profiles if needed.
  • Engage in planning activities in collaboration with Director of Development to identify and implement fundraising goals and objectives related to Foundation & Corporate partnerships.
  • Provide support for our Volunteer Fundraising Committee and Board of Directors when necessary

Qualifications

  • A university degree or college diploma or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 2-3 years of non-profit fundraising experience, preferably with corporate partnerships and/or grant writing.
  • Experienced with donor recognition and stewardship practices, with a keen understanding of and respect for the donor cycle, journey, and experience; you can proactively identify engagement and stewardship opportunities to enrich donor relationships.
  • Computer / word processing / database experience required, preferably in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge/NXT environments.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare environment would be helpful but not essential

Other

  • Valid driver’s licence is helpful, but not essential.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings as required.
