Care in residence for end of life

During the final weeks of life, individuals may move into our hospice residence for 24/7 on-site hospice palliative care. A doctor’s referral is required for admission.

Here at Dorothy Ley Hospice, we believe everyone should have access to compassionate care through serious illness and their palliative journey.

We offer care in the community and in our residence.

Dorothy Ley Hospice is a comfortable, homelike residence tucked away in a quiet spot next to Etobicoke Creek. Our hospice has 12 spacious care suites, each filled with natural light. You will have your own bathroom, a comfortable medical bed, a sleep couch, and a window nook.

The rooms have a personal fridge, a TV, and extra seating for family and visitors. The rooms are large enough for small gatherings, and we have taken great care to make sure they can accommodate your family and caregivers overnight. Your room is your own, so you can bring items that will help to make it feel like home for you — and even your pets can visit.

During your time here, you will have 24/7 support from our experienced care team. Two nurses and a personal support worker are always in the residence wing, along with trained palliative volunteers located at a central desk.

The care team works closely with the palliative doctors connected to our hospice, and together they will make sure you experience the exceptional and compassionate care we are known for.

Part of that care is our Wellness services. We offer different therapies in your room or in our dedicated Wellness space, all to support relaxation.

Your family and caregivers can receive our Wellness services, spiritual care, and counseling too. We believe caring for your family is part of caring for you. They also have access to a family room with its own shower space. We want everyone to feel as comfortable as possible while here.

Our hospice flourishes thanks to the many volunteers who are part of our team. Trained volunteers provide our Wellness services, and we have therapy dogs who will visit you if you want. Our kitchen runs on volunteers who will prepare your healthy home-cooked meals, and our companion volunteers are available to spend time with you, read to you, or do activities you are interested in.

There are other gathering spaces in our hospice beyond your care suite. Families like to use our large living room to visit and our dining area to share a meal.

Our reflection room is quiet and sunlit — a nice spot for meditation, prayer, or conversation. And our activity room has art materials and games available for all to use. On nice days, you and your family may enjoy our large shaded patio area or the nearby path that leads to the Etobicoke Creek. Access to nature is part of our model of care.

While our setting is private and serene, we are also conveniently located. We are close to Sherway Gardens and easily accessed from main highways. Plus, we have ample on-site parking for visitors, and it’s always free.

Our team takes great care to provide a warm and welcoming place that offers your family the opportunity to spend time with each other.

Our services are always available at no cost to you, thanks in large part to our generous donor community.

We are here to help you in any way we can. For more information on Dorothy Ley Hospice and to book an in-person tour, please reach out to us.

What to expect

Care is provided through a transdisciplinary team approach consisting of palliative care physicians, registered nurses (RNs), registered practical nurses (RPNs), personal support workers (PSWs), specially trained volunteers and a nutrition consultant whose primary focus of care is on pain and symptom management and personal care.

Companion volunteers are available in the residence to offer companionship, which may include conversation, arts and crafts, and reading.

Our on-site pharmacy ensures your medication needs will be met accurately and quickly.

Spiritual care is the exploration of beliefs, values, hopes and sources of resilience. It can be helpful whether you practise a religion or not.

Our wellness services can help promote relaxation, calm, and improved sleep. The therapies are delivered by trained hospice volunteers who are certified in their respective treatment(s).
