“Supporting Dorothy Ley Hospice on a monthly basis was an easy decision for me. It’s a simple and stable way to make sure this incredible organization and the care they provide to the community is always there for others who need it – just like it was for me and my wife.

In my case, when Shirley, my wife of 56 years, was dealing with terminal illness, home visits by doctors from the hospice were enormously helpful to her. They simply and gently listened to her, and allowed her to voice her feelings in a way her oncologist and other treatment doctors did not. In fact, I was so touched by seeing how they related to Shirley that I wrote to her oncologist after her death and urged him to engage palliative care at a much earlier stage of treatment.

After Shirley’s death, at home, in the way she wanted, I was lucky enough to connect with the grief support offerings at the hospice, from compassionate one-on-one counselling to various support groups, all of which have played a significant role in bringing me to a place where my wonderful memories of Shirley have now surrounded my grief and allowed me to celebrate our years together.

None of this would have been possible without the outstanding people at Dorothy Ley, who give unstintingly of their time and offer emotional support to those in need.

So, when I say that my continuing donations are modest, no amount could repay what the Dorothy Ley Hospice did for Shirley, and what it has done, and continues to do, for me.”
