About the Palliative Care Centre

The need for palliative care is skyrocketing and the Hospice responded by opening The Dorothy Ley Hospice Palliative Care Centre to serve the needs of our community.

Funded largely through a community based capital fundraising campaign, the Centre achieves one of the goals of our founders - to build Toronto's first freestanding residential hospice for people facing any life-limiting illness. Although there are several palliative care centres in Toronto targeted to specific illnesses, there are no hospices providing both residential and community care for all life-limiting illnesses.

The Centre is a 22,000 square foot residence where more than 150 people a year  can be nurtured in a tranquil, comfortable, home-like setting during their final weeks of life.

The Centre ensures that people in this community have access to the quality of care they need -- close to their family and friends.

Scent Free Environment

Please note that the Centre is a scent-free environment out of consideration for the health and safety of staff, volunteers, individuals, families/visitors who may have allergies.  Also, many individuals during their last weeks of life may experience adverse reactions and/or exhibit enhanced sensitivity to smell. Therefore, we encourage families to consider alternatives to flowers or consider ones with little to no scent or pollen.  Please see our Flower Guidelines for those that are acceptable and not acceptable.
