Interior finishing is well underway and things are starting to look finished.  A lot of small details are currently being worked on and it won't be long before we're ready to move in.  In these images of the lower level, you can see how far things have come.  (l to r) Plenty of light is provided by large windows.  Finished ceiling tiles and recessed lighting in the hallways provide a warm glow.  Offices with window panels will let in the natural light from the open areas.

Now that the exterior is "closed in", work on the interior is progressing quickly.  Soon, all the walls will be complete and fixtures will be installed. In these images you can see how far we've come!  Residents will be able to enjoy a wonderful view of nature right outside each room (top left). Staff are given a tour (top right) of the program room on the lower level of the Centre.  Meanwhile, on the main level (bottom left) the framing in resident's rooms is almost complete.  The next step will see the application of drywall.  Outside the Centre, masons are busy with brickwork on the lower level (bottom right).

With the exterior framing complete, windows are being installed.  Here you can see some of the large bay windows in the residential rooms on the west end of the Centre.  A layer of yellow insullation has also been applied and will soon be covered by the exterior brick facing.

Now that the groundwork has been laid, work is now underway to complete the remaining "frame" of the new Dorothy Ley Hospice Palliative Care Centre.  Once the supporting walls are done, the finished surfaces (exterior brick and interior drywall and paint) will be next.  Hopice staff were recently treated to a tour of the construction site to see how things were progressing.  The top left image shows window frames in the lower level confernce and meeting rooms.  At top right and bottom left, workers are putting up block walls on the main level.  At bottom right, staff are being shown around the site and comparing architectural plans to the real world.

With the lower level frame complete, work has begun on the main level.  The floor has been installed and beams and colums are being welded into place.  It won't be long until the outer walls will go up and we see the shape of the final building.

The Walls are Coming! The Walls are Coming!  The construction team is busy putting together the forms into which the concrete will be poured to create the walls on the lower level of the Centre.  It won't be long before the overall shape of the building becomes clear.

Even in the snow and cold, progress is being made.  Here, the construction team is installing the forms which will be filled with concrete to create foundation footings. It won't be long until the building starts to take shape.  The straw helps to keep the ground stable in cold wet weather by absorbing surface water and reducing muddy spots.  It not only helps make the job easier but enhances safety and contributes to the environmental LEED status of the project by reducing run off and erosion.

Signs to let people know what's happening behind the construction barriers arrive just in time for work to begin on excavation for the foundation.  They also made a great backdrop for a visit from local politician, Laurel Broten, MPP Etobicoke-Lakeshore and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care who was on hand to make a grant presention from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to Ron Lirette, DLH Executive Director and Jack Cooper, DLH Board President.

Preparing the underground services (left).  Our commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in the way trash is sorted for processing and recycling. (right image) The Centre will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, one of only a handful of facilities in Canada be so designated.
