Our Integrative Wellness Service follows an individualized approach that embraces personal responses to illness, death and loss.
The Integrative Wellness Service is available through both our
Community and Residential Programs as well as on-site at some of our
community partner agencies. You will find an up-to-date list of when the
various Wellness therapies are being offered on the Program Schedule page of our website.
The following therapies are offered by specially trained staff and volunteers:
Therapeutic Touch (TT)
With Therapeutic Touch the practitioner moves his or her hands over an
individual's "energy field" to direct the flow of energy. Therapeutic
Touch is based on the belief that each living thing has a "life energy
field" which extends beyond the surface of the body and generates an
aura. With Therapeutic Touch, the practitioner attempts to influence the
individual's energy imbalances by gently manipulating the body's energy
flow and adjusting it as a whole. As part of our Pathways to Wellness
Service, we provide Therapeutic Touch Treatments during chemotherapy sessions at Trillium Health Centre
. To set up a Therapeutic Touch session during chemotherapy, please call Cher Curshon at 416-626-0116 ext. 228.
The practice of Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that aids
relaxation and movement of our internal energy "chi" to create flow
around the body. At Day Program a beginner's level of movements and
forms are taught in such a way as to keep the body relaxed and flowing.
Movements are also taught for those who prefer a seated position.
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific points along
the energy pathway to restore the balance of vital energy. It is proven
to be an effective and safe complement to medications and treatments
for a variety of conditions and ailments. The effectiveness of
acupuncture for pain relief, nausea, anxiety and addiction is well
recognized by medical professionals.
Relaxation / Guided Imagery Meditation
A guided meditation practice that stimulates your imagination with the
intention of bringing you to a relaxed and focused state. It is based on
the concept that your body and mind are connected. Using all of your
senses, your body seems to respond as though what you are imagining is
Expressive Art Therapy
Various creative projects are enjoyed individually and in group.
Expressive Arts involves mind, body and the emotions and brings forth
the 'artists' intuitive imaginative abilities as well as logical, linear
thought. The use of imagery and nonverbal modes offers individuals an
alternative path for self-exploration and communication. This process
is a powerful and highly therapeutic integrative force and one enjoyed
by Day Program participants.
The Legacy Program provides individuals an opportunity to create a
tangible legacy for their loved ones. It also facilitates the potential
for personal resolution and growth as they reflect on their unique life
story. Legacy work offers an opportunity for creative flexibility when
reminiscing on one's life story, with the use of collage, writing,
audio recordings, video tape and other art projects, the dying are
provided the tools to share what they wish to leave behind. This
program is provided by trained volunteers and arts therapists.
